Florida state board of education sets race-based achievement goals for students

According to the Palm Beach Post, the Florida State Board of Education has adopted a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, FBE wants 90% of Asian students, 88% of white students, 81% of Hispanics, and 74% of black students to be reading at or above grade level.

Seven more states, Puerto Rico, and the Bureau of Indian Education request NCLB waivers

As reported by the U.S. Department of Education on ed.gov, seven more states, Puerto Rico, and the Bureau of Indian Education have requested waivers of the accountability requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act, in exchange for state-developed plans to prepare all students for college and career, focus aid on the neediest students, and support effective teaching and leadership.

According to an Associated Press report in the Charleston Daily Mail, the West Virginia Department of Education has applied to the U.S. Department of Education for a waiver from the No Child Left Behind Act’s accountability standards.

Texas plans to apply for NCLB waiver; New Hampshire files its NCLB waiver application

According to an Associated Press report in the Tyler Morning Telegraph, the state of Texas plans to apply for a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education to avoid some federal accountability standards imposed by the No Child Left Behind Act, even though state officials previously expressed concern about the possible strings attached to such a reprieve. Meanwhile, the Foster’s Daily Democrat reports that Governor John Lynch has announced that New Hampshire has submitted its application for an NCLB waiver.

According to the Newport News Daily Press, new achievement objectives for Virginia’s Standards of Learning have upset the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, which called them “insulting and narrow minded” in a letter to Governor Bob McDonnell.

Pennsylvania enacts law requiring districts to file annual reports on athletic opportunities for all student athletes

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Governor Corbett recently signed legislation aimed at assisting female student-athletes achieve equity as mandated by a decades-old federal law. For the first time, the state’s 500 school districts will have to submit full reports on athletic opportunities, including who participates and how much is spent on sports across the board.

Florida school board voices opposition to giving grades to its schools for disabled students

The Tampa Bay Times reports that members of the Hillsborough County School Board used strong language to voice their opposition to the new state requirement that the district grade the academic performance of its schools for disabled students.

Massachusetts governor signs teacher evaluation bill into law

According to the State House News Service in The MetroWest Daily News, Governor Deval Patrick has signed into law legislation that gives teacher performance and evaluations greater weight in public school personnel decisions.
