Arizona court upholds constitutionality of school voucher program for students with disabilities

The Maricopa County Superior Court has denied the plaintiffs’ motion seeking to permanently enjoin the enforcement of SB 1553, a scholarship program known as the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Accounts. The court rejected the plaintiffs’ constitutional challenge to the program, saying, “The exercise of parental choice among education options makes the program constitutional.”

Arizona legislator proposes measure to offer Bible study class as high school elective

An Arizona legislator is sponsoring a bill the state Board of Education to design a course called “The Bible and its Influence on Western Culture,” reports the Associated Press (AP) in the Republic. The course would be an elective at high schools that choose to offer it.

Arizona education organizations challenge state law providing public scholarships to disabled students to attend private schools

The Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) and Arizona Education Association (AEA) have filed suit challenging a new law that provides publicly funded scholarships for children with disabilities to attend private schools, reports the Cronkite News. The suit, which was filed in Maricopa County Superior Court, contends that the law is unconstitutional because it provides public funds to private or religious institutions.

Arizona’s highest court refuses to hear school funding suit

The Arizona Supreme Court has rejected a lawsuit filed by five school districts, the Arizona School Boards Association, the Arizona Education Association and several individuals alleging that the current state budget should have included a full inflation adjustment in funding for K-12 public schools, says the Arizona Daily Star.
