Federal appellate court rules former Michigan school security guards were not deprived of due process when they were terminated

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit has affirmed a district court’s decision granting judgment to a school district, ruling that the district did not deprive school security guards of property without due process of law when it terminated their employment without notice or hearing to outsource their positions.

Hawaii’s public school teachers reject proposed contract

KITV ABC 4 reports that Hawaii’s public school teachers have overwhelmingly rejected a proposed contract by a margin of 67% to 33%. The teachers turned down a six-year deal that included pay raises based on performance and years in service.

Teachers’ union, Chicago school officials settle legal dispute over length of school day

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has agreed to halt temporarily its suit against Chicago Public Schools (CPS), says the Chicago Sun Times, in exchange for CPS’ promise not to attempt to expand its longer-school-day pilot program beyond the 13 elementary schools already participating this year.

Illinois labor board sides with Chicago teachers’ union; calls on court to prevent district from directly negotiating longer school day

A state labor relations board has sided with the Chicago Teachers Union, reports the Chicago Tribune. The union had asked the state attorney general’s office to seek an injunction preventing more of Chicago public schools from lengthening their days.

Hawaii teachers’ union’s suit charges state labor relations board unconstitutionality denied its motion for intermediate relief in collective bargaining dispute with state education officials

The Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) has filed suit in state court, reports Courthouse News Service, alleging that the Hawaii Labor Relations Board (HLRB) unconstitutionally denied its motion for interlocutory relief from the state’s “take it or leave it” approach to collective bargaining by repeatedly delaying hearings on the teacher union’s complaint.

Washington state court orders Tacoma school district’s striking teachers to return to work and resume negotiations

Washington Superior Court Judge Bryan Chushcoff has approved a temporary restraining order (TRO) requiring striking Tacoma teachers to return to work and both sides to resume negotiations, says the News Tribune. The TRO requires the teachers to return to work until a full hearing can be held on the legality of their walkout or until they reach a contract agreement with the school district, whichever comes first.

Hawaii agrees to drop random drug testing policy for teachers

According to KITV ABC 4, the State of Hawaii has agreed to end implementation of its random drug testing policy for teachers, for which it had negotiated in a 2007 contract. Although the teachers had agreed to the contract, which included the random drug testing program along with pay increases, the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) has opposed the policy since the contract was signed.
