Virginia district pays $141,000 to defend, then settles, lawsuit with teacher falsely accused of student sexual molestation

The Washington Post reports that after Fairfax County school teacher Sean Lanigan was acquitted of molesting a 12-year-old girl in 2010, he asked the Fairfax school district to reimburse his legal fees, as Virginia law allows.

School discipline reformers in Colorado seek to eliminate “zero tolerance” rules

According to the Denver Post, school discipline reform has gained traction, as several organizations have mobilized efforts to dismantle what they call the “school-to-prison pipeline.” They claim policies needlessly shunt misbehaving students into the criminal justice system and disproportionately affect minorities. Meanwhile, schools fret over liability and program mandates, while youth and family advocates worry that gutting effective new approaches could render any changes pointless.

States move toward reducing criminal penalties for minors charged with sexting

The Associated Press reports that Rhode Island has joined 20 other states considering bills this year to adjust penalties for teen sexting. The legislation working its way through the Rhode Island General Assembly would make sexting by minors a juvenile offense similar to truancy.

Five of six students facing criminal charges in Massachusetts bullying case accept plea agreement

Five of the six defendants charged in connection with the 2010 bullying that allegedly led to the suicide of Phoebe Prince, have agreed to admit to a misdemeanor; in exchange, prosecutors will drop more serious charges against them, says the Boston Globe. The students will probably receive probation, subject to the approval of a judge.

Massachusetts parent sues district and police over handling of picture drawn by son in school
