New York district signs agreement with OCR to enhance minorities’ opportunities for advanced courses

The White Plains, New York school system has entered into an agreement with U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights that requires the district to encourage and provide more opportunities for nonwhite students to take AP and honors courses.

ED investigating claims of racially discriminatory student discipline in Seattle district

The Seattle Times reports that the U.S. Department of Education is investigating whether Seattle Public Schools discriminates against African-American students by disciplining them “more frequently and more harshly than similarly situated white students,” said ED spokesman Jim Bradshaw.

Virginia’s race based achievement goals for students draw the ire of Virginia Legislative Black Caucus

According to the Newport News Daily Press, new achievement objectives for Virginia’s Standards of Learning have upset the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, which called them “insulting and narrow minded” in a letter to Governor Bob McDonnell.

ED grants NCLB waivers to five more states

The New York Times reports that the U.S. Department of Education has approved the applications of Arkansas, Missouri, South Dakota, Utah, and Virginia seeking relief from key conditions in the No Child Left Behind Act.
