The Student Press Law Center reports that the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington has sent a letter to Everett School District’s superintendent, charging that Samantha Negrete, a student at North Middle School, was forced to log onto her Facebook account so Vice Principal Bryan Toutant could view it.

Federal appellate court rejects Illinois principal’s First Amendment retaliation claim for reporting her predecessor’s financial misconduct

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit has ruled that school district officials in Illinois did not retaliate against a former middle school principal for exercising her First Amendment free speech rights by reporting her predecessor’s misuse of district funds.

Massachusetts enacts law requiring public and private school teachers to be fingerprinted

According to an Associated Press report in The Boston Globe, Governor Deval Patrick has signed a bill into law that will require public and private school teachers, workers at child care centers, and school bus drivers, among others, to submit fingerprints for criminal background checks.

Former finance chief of California school district gets 8 years for stealing $700K

The Los Angeles Times reports that William Agopian, the former finance chief for the Lynwood Unified School District, has been convicted of taking more than $700,000 in public funds to fund a lavish life style of high-end restaurants, expensive hotels and sports tickets, and has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Student sues Pennsylvania district for teacher harassment for wearing Romney T-shirt

According to the Pennsylvania Record, Samantha Pawlucy, a student at Charles Carroll High School, has filed suit against the Philadelphia School District claiming a violation of her free speech rights when her geometry teacher, Lynette Gaymon, harassed her because she was wearing a Romney-Ryan T-shirt.

North Carolina parents sue district for strip-search of elementary student for missing $20

The Fayette Observer reports that Clarinda and Lionel Shawn Cox, the parents of Justin Cox, have filed suit in federal court against the Sampson County Board of Education, alleging their then-fifth grade son was strip-searched in June 2012 by now-former Union Elementary School Assistant Principal Teresa Holmes for $20 reported missing in the school’s cafeteria.

EEOC issues Q&A guidance for application of Title VII and ADA in cases of domestic or dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has recently released a guidance document, “Questions and Answers: The Application of Title VII and the ADA to Applicants and Employees Who Experience Domestic or Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, or Stalking,” to assist employers in processing applicant and employee matters involving these situations.
