Maine court dismisses transgender student’s discrimination suit for schools’ refusal to allow use of girls’ restroom

The Penobscot County Superior Court has ruled that Riverside RSU 26, formerly Orono School District, did not violate a transgender student’s rights under the Maine Human Rights Act when school officials prohibited the student from using the girls’ restroom at school. It also rejected the student’s claims of discrimination under the MHRA based on deliberated indifference to student-on-student harassment or harassment by school officials.

Lawsuit charges new Tennessee law voids local school districts’ anti-bullying policies

A lawsuit brought by three Nashville council members and a number of residents alleges that a new state law voids school board policies that protect gay and lesbian students from bullying and harassment, says the Republic. The law prohibits local governments from creating anti-discrimination regulations that are stricter than the state’s, and repeals a Nashville city ordinance barring companies that discriminate against gays and lesbians from doing business with the city.

Florida school district extends non-discrimination policy to protect transgender students

According to the Miami Herald, Broward School Board recently changed its non-discrimination policy to acknowledge transgender students. Any employee who discriminates against someone for any reason, including race, ethnicity, gender, and now gender expression, is subject to discipline, ranging from a warning to dismissal.

School officials at Michigan high school deny transgender student’s bid to be elected homecoming king

The Muskegon Chronicle reports that a biological female student at Mona Shores High School (MSHS), who identifies as being transgender, is prevented from running for homecoming king. Because MSHS officials cut off voting for Oakleigh Reed for homecoming king, the student’s supporters claim that Reed is being unfairly discriminated against; they are organizing a campaign to bring attention to the cause of transgender teens.

Student accepts Mississippi school district’s offer to settle suit over same-sex prom date ban

A lesbian student, who was prohibited from bringing a same-sex date to her high school prom, has agreed to settle her suit against the district district, says the Associated Press.
