Maine court dismisses transgender student’s discrimination suit for schools’ refusal to allow use of girls’ restroom

The Penobscot County Superior Court has ruled that Riverside RSU 26, formerly Orono School District, did not violate a transgender student’s rights under the Maine Human Rights Act when school officials prohibited the student from using the girls’ restroom at school. It also rejected the student’s claims of discrimination under the MHRA based on deliberated indifference to student-on-student harassment or harassment by school officials.

The Standard-Examiner reports that the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah has filed suit in federal court against Davis School District for removing a children’s book about a family with same-sex parents from its library shelves.

Minnesota district and local police investigate bullies’ online comments encouraging suicide

KMSP-TV Fox 9 reports that Anoka-Hennepin School District and police are investigating a group of middle school students who took a fight to Facebook and began a bout of cyber-bullying that crossed a scary line. Officials say at least one of the bullies made a post on Facebook urging a group of girls to go kill themselves.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Penobscot County Superior Court Justice William Anderson has heard oral arguments in a discrimination suit brought by the parents of a transgender student over the local school district’s handling of their transgender child’s transition from male to female.

Florida district enters into consent decree with ACLU to allow gay-straight alliance student club to meet at school

According to the Associated Press in The Miami Herald, Marion County school officials have entered into a consent decree that will allow the formation of a club of the Gay-Straight Alliance designed to promote understanding among gay and straight students at Vanguard High School.

ACLU sues Florida district for refusal to allow gay-straight alliance at high school

Ocala.com reports that the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Florida has filed suit against the Marion County School Board and Superintendent Jim Yancey, alleging officials at Vanguard High School rejected a proposal by two students to start a Gay-Straight Alliance at the school.
