Civil rights groups’ federal complaint charges Milwaukee voucher program discriminates against disabled students

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that a group of parents and civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Disability Rights Wisconsin, have filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) civil rights division alleging the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program discriminates against children with disabilities and segregates them in public schools.

Milwaukee teachers’ union drops suit over exclusion of erectile dysfunction drugs from healthcare plan

The Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA) has agreed to dismiss its suit over the school district’s 2005 decision to exclude erectile dysfunction drugs and similar pills in the health insurance plans offered by the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Although MTEA’s Executive Director, Stan Johnson, declined to comment further on the matter, court records indicate that the union, the School Board and the state labor commission agreed to dismiss the lawsuit earlier this month.

Teachers’ union sues Milwaukee school system for exclusion of erectile dysfunction drugs from health care plan

According to the Associated Press, the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA) has been waging a two year battle with the Milwaukee school system’s board over the board’s decision to exclude erectile dysfunction (ed) drugs, such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, from the teachers’ health care plan. MTEA contends the drugs are necessary treatment for “an exclusively gender-related condition.” However, the school board attorneys counter that the drugs were excluded in 2005 to save money, and there is no discrimination because they are used primarily for recreational sex and not out of medical necessity. In addition, the legal challenging over ed drugs, MTEA is protesting the board’s massive layoff of teachers in June.
