Federal appellate court rules Missouri district’s use of drug dogs to screen student property is not unreasonable seizure

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit has ruled that a school district’s procedure for using drug dogs to survey areas of a school, including sniffing students’ personal belongings when not in their possession during the drug survey, did not violate a student’s Fourth Amendment seizure rights.

The Kansas City Star reports that the Lee’s Summit School District has settled a suit brought by twin brothers Steven and Sean Wilson, who were suspended for 180 days because of a racist rant that appeared on an Internet blog they created.

Missouri parent claims daughter was subjected to racial discrimination and harassment by basketball coach

According to The Examiner, Fred Lane, the father of a Blue Springs South High School sophomore basketball player, Cloe Lane, who is black, is suing the Blue Springs School District in Jackson County Circuit Court, citing racial discrimination, harassment, retaliation and civil rights violations, and is seeking punitive damages.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a federal jury found in favor of the St. Louis School District, rejecting allegations by Veronica O’Brien, a former elected St. Louis School Board chief, that a state-appointed school board cut off her legal defense in retaliation for her outspoken criticism.

State court judge rules that Missouri district’s transfer law is unconstitutional

As reported on EducationNews.org, a state court judge ruled that the Missouri law that would have allowed students to transfer out of schools in failing school districts violated the clause in the state Constitution that prohibited the legislature from forcing unfunded mandates onto local governments.

Missouri paper sues school district for not disclosing settlement records

According to the Associated Press, as reported on NECN.com, The Springfield News-Leader, a Missouri newspaper, has filed a lawsuit against the Republic School District for not disclosing how much money the district paid the family of a middle school student who claimed her school ignored her complaints that she had been repeatedly raped by another student.

Missouri court rules that law allowing students from unaccredited districts to transfer to neighboring accredited districts violates state law against unfunded mandates

The Courthouse News Service reports that St. Louis County Judge David Lee Vincent has ruled against students from the unaccredited St. Louis school system seeking to transfer to schools in the neighboring Clayton School District.
