ACLU charges Washington middle school administrator with illegal Facebook search

The Student Press Law Center reports that the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington has sent a letter to Everett School District’s superintendent, charging that Samantha Negrete, a student at North Middle School, was forced to log onto her Facebook account so Vice Principal Bryan Toutant could view it.

New Jersey appellate court upholds district’s removal of teacher who posted derogatory remarks about her students on Facebook

A two-judge panel of the Appellate Division of the New Jersey Superior Court has ruled that school district officials were justified in terminating an elementary school teacher for posting derogatory remarks on Facebook about her students, including referring to them as “future criminals.”

Minnesota district and local police investigate bullies’ online comments encouraging suicide

KMSP-TV Fox 9 reports that Anoka-Hennepin School District and police are investigating a group of middle school students who took a fight to Facebook and began a bout of cyber-bullying that crossed a scary line. Officials say at least one of the bullies made a post on Facebook urging a group of girls to go kill themselves.

New York City Department of Education issues guidelines limiting teacher-student contact via social media

The New York Times reports that according to guidelines just released by the New York City Department of Education (NYCDE) governing employees’ use of social media, teachers may not contact students through personal pages on websites like Facebook and Twitter, but can communicate via pages set up for classroom use.
