Advocacy group asks U.S. Supreme Court to review suspension of Virginia student for spitwad incident

The poststarnews.com (Saugerties, New York) reports that the Rutherford Institute (RI), a civil liberties organization, is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case of a Virginia high school student who was suspended for shooting plastic “spitwads” while at school, claiming that the school’s actions were irrational and violated the constitutional guarantee of due process of law.

Florida school board chooses not to adopt policy banning advocacy groups as classroom guest speakers

According to The Tampa Tribune, Hillsborough County School Board (HCSB) members have decided they do not need to adopt any new guidelines covering guest speakers in the classroom because the district has policies already in place. The decision, which came without a vote, was a blow to those who have rallied against the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for weeks at multiple school board meetings.

National Christian advocacy group files legal challenge to Virginia district’s community service policy

Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) has filed suit in federal court against the Fairfax County School Board (FCSB), reportsThe Washington Post, charging the board’s community service policy discriminates against students who volunteer with religious organizations. “If you are doing community work that is part of a church service, you can’t be given credit,” said ADF’s Matt Sharp.

According to the Sun Sentinel, the Palm Beach County School Board (PBCSB) has approved a Diversity and Equity Committee. One of the 24-member committee’s primary goals will be ensure students are exposed to teachers and administrators of color and varied backgrounds.

Federal district court issues consent decree in Minnesota peer harassment suit; school district pledges improved treatment of gay and lesbian students

The Anoka-Hennepin School District (AHSD) in Minnesota has entered into a consent decree with the U.S. Dept. of Justice and the U.S. Dept. of Education, Office for Civil Rights resolving the federal civil rights investigation and two separate actions against the district and several administrators. As reported by the Star Tribune, AHSD’s school board voted 5-1 to approve the settlement agreement with six former and current students who claim they were targets of peer bullying based on their sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation.

Florida legislative proposal to allow student-led prayer likely to be enacted

After the Florida House, 88-27, overwhelmingly approved a bill that would allow student-led prayer in public schools, reports the Times/Herald, it appears Gov. Rick Scott will sign the measure into law. Under the bill, local school districts would be able to vote to allow any student to deliver “inspirational messages” at public school events. Teachers and other school employees could not take part.

Illinois Human Rights Commission endorses proposed legislation requiring statewide model bullying prevention policy

The Illinois Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has unanimously endorsed HB 5290, legislation proposed by Rep. Kelly Cassidy that would build on the Illinois School Violence Act and call on the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to develop a template for a statewide model bullying prevention policy, reports the Aledo Times Records.

Federal district court allows church to hold religious services in New York City public school

A federal district court in New York has granted a church a preliminary injunction allowing it to hold its religious worship services in a New York City public school on Sundays. The court concluded that the church had demonstrated irreparable harm and a likelihood of success on the merits of its First Amendment Free Exercise Clause and Establishment Clause claims. Previous decisions in this case had been based on the church’s Free Speech claims.
