Louisiana court denies injunction in state school voucher suit while legal challenges to program’s constitutionality moves forward

The Times-Picayune reports that District Judge Tim Kelley, of the 19th Judicial District, has ruled that he does not have jurisdiction to provide an injunction sought by opponents of Louisiana’s private school voucher program, saying his hands were tied by a state law that prohibits him from blocking the policy if that would create a deficit.

Private school voucher programs face legal challenges

According to the Associated Press (AP), at the heart of brewing political fights is whether public dollars should go to school vouchers to help make private schools more affordable. Opponents say they erode public schools by taking away money, violate the separation of church and state by giving public dollars to religiously based private schools, and are not a proven way to improve test scores.

Oklahoma voucher law for special needs students held unconstitutional

The Tulsa World reports that a state court has struck down Oklahoma’s law providing private school vouchers to special needs students on the ground that it violates the state constitution. Under the Lindsey Nicole Henry Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Act, the state sets aside public education monies to fund a portion of students’ private-school tuition.
