Louisiana Supreme Court hears arguments in school voucher case

The Alexandria Town Talk reports that the Louisiana Supreme Court has heard oral arguments in a suit brought by opponents of the state’s private school voucher program, including the Louisiana School Boards Association, the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, and the Louisiana Association of Educators.

According to a report on thenewsstar.com, Louisiana Education Superintendent John White is “optimistic” that the Louisiana Supreme Court will throw out a Baton Rouge district judge’s ruling that utilizing the public school funding formula, known as Minimum Foundation Program, to pay for private school vouchers is unconstitutional.

Proposed constitutional amendment would give Kansas legislature power to set school funding

According to an Associated Press report in The Daily Union, conservative Republican state legislators upset with past Kansas Supreme Court rulings that the state was not spending enough money on its public schools have proposed a measure that would add a new sentence to the state constitution’s education article declaring that the legislature has the exclusive power to set spending on schools.

Federal appellate court temporarily stays order barring local Louisiana district from implementing school voucher program

In a 2-1 split, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has temporarily stayed the portion of a federal district court order preliminarily enjoining the state of Louisiana from implementing its recently enacted private school voucher program as applied to the Tangipahoa Parish School District.

Indiana bill would fast track siblings into state school voucher program

According to the Courier-Journal, legislation has been introduced in the Indiana legislature to make it easier for siblings of private school voucher students to join Indiana’s voucher program.
