Alabama teachers union sues to block private school tax credit bill

The Birmingham Business Journal reports that the Alabama Education Association has filed a lawsuit to block a bill that would give a tax credit to parents of children at failing schools to offset the cost of attending private school or another public school.

Civil rights groups challenge New Hampshire’s tuition-tax credit program

The New Hampshire Union Leader reports that the ACLU, the New Hampshire chapter of the ACLU, and Americans United for Separation of Church and State have filed suit against New Hampshire’s Education Tax Credit system, the Republican-backed plan that issues tax credits to businesses that donate to scholarship funds used to pay tuition for students to attend private and religious schools.

Federal judge releases Pennsylvania district from lawsuit over principal’s suspension

The Patriot-News reports that a Pennsylvania federal judge has freed the West Shore School District from a lawsuit by a middle school principal who claims her civil rights were trampled when she was suspended without pay.

Former finance chief of California school district gets 8 years for stealing $700K

The Los Angeles Times reports that William Agopian, the former finance chief for the Lynwood Unified School District, has been convicted of taking more than $700,000 in public funds to fund a lavish life style of high-end restaurants, expensive hotels and sports tickets, and has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Oregon charter school founders accused of $20M fraud

According to The Oregonian, Tim King and Norm Donohoe, who ran a chain of taxpayer-funded charter schools across small-town Oregon from their headquarters in Clackamas, have scammed the state out of $17 million and must repay that plus $2.7 million more, the state said in a recent court filing.

Pennsylvania district sues healthcare provider for failing to pass along prescription drug rebates

The Scranton Times-Tribune reports that the Scranton School District has filed suit against Wellnet Health Plan and Banyan Consulting, claiming it is entitled to a “significant” amount of money in drug rebates that were never passed on to the district by Wellnet.
