ACLU settles suit against California district and city for racial profiling of Latino students

The Los Angeles Times reports that the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California has announced that it has reached settlements with the city of Glendale and the Glendale Unified School District on behalf of eight Latino students who alleged that officials engaged in racial profiling and illegal searches during a 2010 incident at Hoover High School.

Federal district court allows provision in Arizona’s immigration law requiring law enforcement to verify detainees’ immigration status to go forward

The New York Times reports that a U.S. District Court in Arizona has rejected a request by a coalition of civil rights groups that the court strike down a provision in the state’s immigration law requiring authorities to verify the status of people who they suspect are in the country illegally.

The Glendale News-Press reports that the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California (ACLU-SCA) has entered into preliminary negotiations with the City of Glendale and Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) regarding a lawsuit alleging racial profiling of Latino students at Hoover High School.

ACLU files suit against Los Angeles area police departments and school district officials over alleged racial profiling of Hispanic students

The America Civil Liberties Union of Southern California (ACLU-SCA) has filed suit, says the Los Angeles Times, against Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) administrators, the Glendale and Los Angeles police departments and the Los Angeles County Probation Department alleging 55 Latino high school students were illegally detained, searched and interrogated in what the ACLU characterizes as “a textbook case of racial profiling.” Glendale Unified School District spokesman Steven Frasher defended the operation, describing it as an educational effort to deter students from falling into gangs.
