Michigan district adopts policy banning unauthorized firearms in its schools

A local news affiliate, WZZM13.com, reports that members of the board of the Rockford Public Schools has approved a new “weapons-free school zone” policy for the district, which would prohibit any unauthorized firearms on campuses.

According to an Associated Press report, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard signed a bill allowing the state’s school districts to arm teachers and other personnel with guns.

Nebraska state legislator proposes law allowing some school staff to be armed on campus

On the heels of the fatal shooting of an Omaha-area school administrator by a despondent student, Sen. Mark Christensen introduced a bill to allow teachers, administrators and school security guards to carry concealed guns, says the Lincoln Journal Star. The bill, LB516, would allow local school boards to choose by a two-thirds vote to allow such weapons on their property. The bill also applies to colleges and universities. Nebraska now allows people to carry concealed weapons if they are licensed to do so, but the weapons are restricted in many places, including schools. Christensen said he wants local schools to be able to change that.

Class action suit claims Alabama school district is using excessive force to maintain school discipline

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has filed a class action suit on behalf of students and parents accusing the Birmingham Board of Education and Police Chief of “creating a police state within the city’s public high schools” by allowing police officers to “brutalize” students “with chemical weapons,” including Mace, as a way to “enforce basic school discipline,” says Courthouse News Service.
