Parents sue Texas district over “locator” chip in student IDs

According to The Christian Science Monitor, the Northside Independent School District is being sued by a student and her parents over the requirement that students display their student ID badges at all times. The badges are equipped with a “locator” chip that tracks a student anywhere on campus.

Mississippi districts consider allowing student use of personal cellphones and other technology in class

According to the NEMS Daily Journal, the concept of “Bring Your Own Technology” has arrived at Northeastern Mississippi school districts. As schools try to add more technology during a time when they are receiving less funding, many will begin to consider allowing students to use devices they already own.

High tech student badges’ tracking capability sparks controversy in two Houston area school districts

According to a Houston Chronicle report in Education Week, Spring and Santa Fe school districts’ use of student identification badges containing radio frequency tracking technology has alarmed some parents and privacy advocates. They question whether the technology could have unintended consequences, and are worried that hackers could figure out a way to track students after they leave school. They point out that identity theft and stalking could become serious concerns. School officials, however, believe that the devices improve security and increase attendance rates.
