Texas legislature lifts limits on charter schools, reduces high-stakes testing, and modifies graduation requirements

The Texas legislature has voted to adopt two new education bills, which now go to Gov. Rick Perry, reducing the number of high-stakes tests students are required to take, creating a new system of graduation requirements, and expanding the number of charter schools in Texas from 215 to 305 over the next six years.

Federal budget fix removes limit on Texas’ Education Jobs money

Education Week’s EdWatch blog reports that the budget agreement between congressional Democrats and Republicans (signed April 15, 2011 by President Obama) to avoid a government shutdown includes a provision that would allow Texas to finally secure $830 million through the Education Jobs Fund. Texas’ portion of the money had previously been blocked during a standoff between federal and state officials.
